🪔 Dhanteras 2025: History, Significance, Rituals & Muhurat Trading Session Details

🌟 Introduction

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations across India.
It is the day when people worship Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity, and Lord Dhanvantari for good health and longevity.
In 2025, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Saturday, 18 October 2025.

🕰️ Dhanteras 2025 Date, Tithi & Shubh Muhurat

  • Dhanteras Date: Saturday, 18 October 2025

  • Trayodashi Tithi Begins: 18 October (Morning)

  • Trayodashi Tithi Ends: 19 October (Morning)

  • Shubh Puja Muhurat: 5:04 PM to 6:35 PM IST (timings may vary slightly by city – check your local panchang)

This is the most auspicious time to perform Lakshmi and Dhanvantari Puja, buy precious items, and begin festive activities.

📜 History and Mythological Significance of Dhanteras

1. Emergence of Lord Dhanvantari

According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), numerous divine treasures surfaced.
On the thirteenth day, Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and the founder of Ayurveda, emerged carrying a kalash (pot) filled with Amrit (nectar of immortality).

This event symbolizes the healing power of Ayurveda and the value of good health — which is considered the greatest form of wealth.
Hence, Dhanteras is also celebrated as Dhanvantari Jayanti.

2. The Tale of King Hima’s Son and Lord Yama

Another famous legend tells of King Hima’s son, whose horoscope predicted death by snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage.
To protect him, his intelligent wife lit countless diyas (lamps) and piled up gold and silver ornaments near the door.

When Lord Yama, the God of Death, came disguised as a serpent, he was dazzled by the brilliance of the lamps and ornaments and returned without entering the house.
This act is remembered as Yama Deep Daan, symbolizing protection from premature death and darkness.

💰 Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras is not only a festival of wealth but also a day that teaches balance between health, prosperity, and light.
It is believed that buying valuable items on this day invites positive energy and abundance into one’s life.

People also clean and decorate their homes, believing that Goddess Lakshmi visits the cleanest and most welcoming homes first.

The day sets the tone for Diwali celebrations, marking a new beginning filled with light, hope, and prosperity.

🔆 Dhanteras Rituals and Traditions

  1. Cleaning and Decoration
Homes are thoroughly cleaned, decorated with rangoli designs, and adorned with torans made of marigold and mango leaves.

  2. Buying Precious Metals
Buying gold, silver, or steel utensils on Dhanteras is considered auspicious.
It symbolizes the invitation of wealth and good fortune.

  3. Lighting Diyas
In the evening, families light earthen lamps (diyas) at every corner of the house.
A special lamp called Yama Deep is kept burning near the main entrance throughout the night to honor Lord Yama.

  4. Lakshmi and Dhanvantari Puja
Devotees perform Lakshmi Puja to seek prosperity and success, and Dhanvantari Puja for health and well-being.
Offerings include sweets, flowers, incense, and coins.

  5. Business Ritual – Chopda Puja
Traders and business owners open new account books, symbolizing fresh beginnings for the financial year ahead.
